Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis are teaming up again for doubles at the 2025 Australian Open.
Back in 2022, these two, known as the Special K’s, surprised everyone by entering the Australian Open doubles draw. They had tried their luck with wild cards three times before.
In 2013 and 2015, they were knocked out in the first round. But in 2021, they finally won a match before losing again in the second round.

Special K’s Journey
Over those years, they played four matches but only won one. However, everything changed in 2022 when they started winning right from the early rounds. Their first victory was against fellow Aussies Alex Bolt and James McCabe. This win set them up to face top-seeded Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic next.
In an unexpected twist, Kyrgios and Kokkinakis defeated this world-renowned team and made their way to the third round of Melbourne Slam. Fans might think it was like watching a thrilling movie as they continued to dominate each match.
Suddenly, there they were—standing on court for the final against Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell! Two sets later, they celebrated with a shiny trophy above their heads.
Since then, though, they’ve been absent from doubles courts together due to injuries keeping Kyrgios out of play even when plans were made for Wimbledon reunions.
Fast forward to now—Kyrgios is back! He announced through Instagram that he’ll return home (to Australia) alongside his buddy Kokkinakis for one last doubles showdown at AO25!
Fans are probably excited about seeing them have fun again despite singles being more important than ever before; after all—it’s not something either has practiced much lately according to Kokkinakis’ chat with 7News Melbourne: “It’s definitely not going be priority…we owe people some fun.”
While both focus primarily on singles success—they know how magical their run felt because early exits allowed full attention toward those incredible double moments shared together during ’22 season!
Kokkinakis expressed excitement over seeing his friend back on ATP Tour: “Great news for tennis worldwide having him around—a different cat altogether bringing unique energy & skillset.”
