Alcaraz Returns to Barcelona Open as Top Seed in Revamped 2025 Tournament
Spanish tennis fans have reason to celebrate as hometown hero Carlos Alcaraz is set to compete in the 2025 Barcelona Open after missing last year’s tournament due to injury.
The draw for the prestigious clay court event has just been released, and it’s shaping up to be a thrilling competition.

Running from April 14-20, this ATP 500 tournament has undergone a major change. The field has been reduced from 48 to 32 players, eliminating first-round byes and making the competition much tougher right from the start.
Alcaraz, the two-time Barcelona champion and top seed, will face a qualifier in his opening match. But things could get tricky quickly – he might meet either Tomas Machac or Frances Tiafoe in round two.
On the opposite side of the draw, second seed Casper Ruud also starts against a qualifier. The Norwegian clay court specialist would then face either big-serving Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard or another qualifier if he advances.
Tennis fans in Scandinavia might be in for a treat. If the seeds hold, Ruud could meet Denmark’s Holger Rune in the quarterfinals. Rune, seeded sixth, opens against Spanish veteran Albert Ramos-Vinolas.
Stefanos Tsitsipas is looking to showcase his clay court skills against American Reilly Opelka in the first round – a favorable matchup since Opelka’s game isn’t particularly suited to the slow, high-bouncing surface.
In the same quarter, seventh-seeded Arthur Fils will try to build on his strong showing at Monte-Carlo when he faces Pablo Carreno Busta, who enters as a wild card.
The Barcelona Open traditionally serves as a perfect warm-up for the Madrid Open, making it convenient for players to compete in both Spanish tournaments back-to-back.
This year’s event will run alongside the Munich Open, which was recently upgraded to ATP 500 status.
The champion will be crowned on April 20th after what promises to be six days of intense clay court action.
