Carlos Alcaraz Not in “Crisis” Despite Recent Losses, Says Tim Henman

Carlos Alcaraz isn’t facing a crisis despite his recent string of losses, according to former world No. 4 Tim Henman.

The 21-year-old Spanish star has hit a rough patch, dropping two straight matches – a semifinal exit at Indian Wells followed by a surprising first-round defeat at the Miami Open.

It’s unfamiliar territory for Alcaraz, who hasn’t lost more than 13 matches in a single season since his breakthrough year in 2022.

Tennis experts have been divided on what’s happening with the young phenom.

Some believe Alcaraz will battle inconsistency throughout his career, while others urge fans not to overreact to this temporary slump.

Henman, speaking to TNT Sports, dismissed the notion that the four-time major champion is in any kind of trouble.

“I definitely don’t see it as a moment of crisis,” Henman said. “He’s not playing his best tennis, but it’s all part of the journey of learning and understanding yourself.”

The British tennis legend pointed to specific areas where Alcaraz could improve.

“For me, shot selection is still an area that he can improve on. I think when he improves his shot selection, then he will become more consistent. And he’s one of the best players in the world. So I think he’s capable of winning any tournament that he enters.”

During the same interview, Henman also shared his thoughts on rising British star Jack Draper, who recently stepped into the spotlight as Britain’s top-ranked male player following Andy Murray’s retirement announcement.

“I spoke to his brother Ben, who acts as one of his agents, and he was very aware of how Jack’s profile has just increased massively,” Henman noted.

The pressure will only intensify for Draper in the coming months.

“Certainly, come Wimbledon, come the grass court season, that spotlight is going to be burning pretty brightly. But I definitely think Jack has the capacity mentally, physically and technically to deal with it.”

Henman believes Draper’s support system will help him navigate his new status.

“He’s got a very good team around him who will provide that support,” Henman said. “So yes, it’s still a steep learning curve for Jack. He’s just broken into the top 10, but I think he’s playing brilliant tennis.”

Despite Draper’s recent success, Henman sees room for growth as the clay court season approaches.

“I still think there’s plenty of areas that he can improve on. He’s got a busy clay court season coming up, but it will be exciting when he gets to the grass in the UK.”
