Alcaraz To Lose Millions In Montreal Bonus

-

Carlos Alcaraz had an amazing 2024, but he won’t end up as the top earner from the ATP bonus scheme.

Last year, ATP introduced a Bonus Pool to reward top players at ATP 500 and Masters tournaments. The goal was to give extra money to those who did well in these events.

Bonus Pool and Top Earners

The top five players at ATP 500-level events shared $1.3 million. Daniil Medvedev got $600,000 for being first, while Alcaraz took home $300,000 for second place. But Alcaraz shone brighter in bigger tournaments.

For Masters 1000 and ATP Finals, a massive $20 million bonus was shared among the best players. Thirty players with the most points from these events received bonuses.

Alcaraz led this list after the 2023 ATP Finals with 3,685 points. He won Indian Wells and Madrid Open, was runner-up in Cincinnati, and reached the semifinals in Turin. This earned him $4.4 million in bonuses .

Medvedev came second on this list too, ahead of Jannik Sinner. Novak Djokovic missed out despite winning two Masters because he didn’t play all mandatory events.

Fans might think it’s unfair Djokovic missed out on such big money just because of some rules!

Djokovic skipped five of nine Masters events; hence his entire bonus check was voided by ATP rules.

Why Alcaraz’s 2024 Bonus Payment Will Be Reduced By Half

Alcaraz already missed one mandatory event (Rome) due to a forearm injury, cutting his bonus by 25%. Now he’s missing another (Montreal) for the Olympics .

This means his expected millions will be halved by season’s end! If he skips another like Cincinnati or Shanghai, it’ll drop by 75%.

Currently ranked fourth with 1400 points in the standings for Masters 1000 and year-end Bonus Pool; Sinner leads with 2000 points followed by Zverev and Medvedev.

Stefanos Tsitsipas, Casper Ruud, Andrey Rublev are also high up there with over 1000 points each along with Grigor Dimitrov, Nicolas Jarry & Tommy Paul benefiting too! However no official word yet on how much they’ll get for their efforts this year!

What do you think about these changes?
