Alcaraz Wins Maiden Monte-Carlo Masters Title, Rises To World No. 2 Spot

-

Carlos Alcaraz is back on top after pulling off an impressive comeback against Lorenzo Musetti to claim the 2025 Monte-Carlo Masters title.

The 21-year-old Spanish star hadn’t lifted an ATP Masters 1000 trophy since Indian Wells last year. That drought is finally over.

Alcaraz wasn’t always at his best during the tournament. He needed comebacks against both Francisco Cerundolo in his opening match and later against Arthur Fils just to reach the final.

His opponent, Musetti, had been on a tear, knocking out big names like Matteo Berrettini, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Alex de Minaur on his way to the championship match.

The final started with Alcaraz breaking serve immediately, but Musetti quickly turned things around. The Italian broke back and added another break to jump ahead 3-1.

From there, Musetti stayed solid on serve. He didn’t face another break point while closing out the first set 6-3.

But something clicked for Alcaraz in the second set.

The four-time Grand Slam champion completely flipped the script, breaking Musetti twice and producing some absolutely ridiculous rallies. Before anyone knew it, he was up 5-0.

There was a brief hiccup when Alcaraz tried to serve out the set at 5-1. He squandered three straight set points and had to fight off four break points from a determined Musetti.

On his fourth set point, Alcaraz finally closed it out 6-1, forcing a deciding third set.

Fans were ready for an epic battle, but it never materialized.

Alcaraz quickly broke twice as Musetti began struggling with a leg injury. The Italian called for the physio, but it was clear he couldn’t compete at full strength.

Rather than retire, Musetti chose to finish the match out of respect for the supportive Monte-Carlo crowd.

He couldn’t win another game, though. Alcaraz completed the comeback 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 to claim the title.

This victory does more than just add another trophy to Alcaraz’s collection. He’ll now rise to World No. 2, leapfrogging Alexander Zverev in the rankings.

He’s now just 2,210 points behind Jannik Sinner for the top spot in the world.
