Alex de Minaur Withdraws from 2024 Shanghai Masters

-

Alex de Minaur had to cancel his plans for the 2024 Shanghai Masters.

This year has been a standout for him with some great performances. He’s been close to the top but never quite broke through until now.

Climbing steadily, he finally reached the Top 10 in the ATP Tour, but injuries have become a hurdle .

Injury Struggles:

During Wimbledon, De Minaur injured his hip trying to catch a volley at match point against Arthur Fils. Though he won that match, it cost him dearly. The injury forced him out of several events, including singles at the Olympics—though he did play doubles.

His condition was visibly bad; despite playing doubles, his hip was clearly troubling him. After pulling out of both the Canada Open and Cincinnati Open, it was clear things weren’t improving.

Surprisingly, De Minaur competed in the US Open and performed exceptionally well. He reached his best-ever result there by making it to the quarter-finals before losing to Jack Draper in three sets.

Fans might wonder why he played when not fully fit; a hip injury doesn’t heal by playing more matches.

Since then, De Minaur hasn’t played any matches and withdrew from both the Laver Cup and Shanghai Masters. He’s been quiet about his condition but recently shared a brief update with fans on social media.

Clearly, either his hip hasn’t healed or he’s taking time off to recover properly. Although his US Open run was impressive, risking further injury might not have been worth it.

“Going through a rough patch at the moment trying to sort out my injury but as a wise person once said: ‘There’s always light at the end of the tunnel.'”

Katie Boulter tried lifting his spirits with her comment reminding him there’s life beyond tennis:

“Damn right there is light; you get to deal with me every day.”

At least while recovering, De Minaur can enjoy watching Katie play since their schedules often clash otherwise.

What do you think? Should he have taken more time off?
