Alex de Minaur had a tough time against Jannik Sinner at the 2024 Davis Cup Finals, and he wasn’t happy about it. Despite being one of the top players on the ATP Tour and making it to the ATP Finals, he lost all his matches there. Just getting to that event is a big deal for many players.
After those finals, Alex decided to join the Davis Cup team even though he hadn’t planned on it. He showed up in Malaga but didn’t manage to win his first match against Taylor Fritz. Thankfully, his teammates helped Australia move past the United States.
In the semi-finals, things got more intense. Matteo Berrettini beat Thanasi Kokkinakis, so Alex had to face Jannik Sinner, who is World No. 1 right now . Unfortunately, Alex lost 3-6, 4-6 despite playing well and was so frustrated that he threw his racket down hard.

Emotions Run High:
Afterward, when asked about his reaction, Alex admitted he regretted throwing his racket but said it showed how much winning meant to him: “(Smiling.) Yeah, I mean, right now, I regret that decision… I’m not going to tell you that I’m happy that I lost that match.” Fans might think it’s normal for players to feel this way after such important games.
He also talked about Australia’s history in the Davis Cup and how they haven’t won since 2003 despite their efforts: “This is something we’ve been trying to win as a team for a while now…”
Even with this loss hanging over him like an unwelcome cloud , Alex felt good about being part of a team with great chemistry: “You know… it’s been really great to be part of this team.”
Looking ahead into 2025 brings new hopes as De Minaur plans some downtime before training begins again for another exciting season starting with Melbourne’s Grand Slam event! What do you think? Can he make a strong comeback next year?
