De Minaur Withdraws from Japan Open, Berrettini Joins

-

Alex de Minaur won’t be playing in the 2024 Japan Open in Tokyo.

His last match was at the US Open, where he made it to the quarterfinals despite battling injuries. De Minaur had to pull out of his Wimbledon quarterfinal against Djokovic due to a hip injury sustained during his fourth-round match against Arthur Fils. This injury left him heartbroken as he couldn’t face Djokovic.

Because of this, De Minaur missed the start of the North American hard-court season and entered the US Open without much practice. Despite this, he reached his first US Open quarterfinal after defeating Jordan Thompson in the fourth round.

Fans might think it’s sad that injuries keep affecting his career. Jack Draper ended De Minaur’s run at the US Open, with physical issues again holding him back. His hip injury flared up during their match, making it tough for him to compete effectively.

Impact on Upcoming Tournaments:

It wasn’t clear if De Minaur’s injury would heal quickly or if it was more serious. Unfortunately, he had to withdraw from both the Laver Cup and now the Japan Open due to not being fit enough. Tommy Paul also pulled out of these events, which hurt Team World’s chances significantly.

De Minaur isn’t ready for the Japan Open either, which starts just days after these other competitions. The Japan Open is one of two ATP 500 tournaments next week; the other is in Beijing.

However, there’s good news for Japan Open organizers: Matteo Berrettini will join the draw in Tokyo! Fans love Berrettini because he’s a former Wimbledon runner-up and plays powerful tennis.

Berrettini replaces Nuno Borges in Tokyo’s draw—a bummer for Borges who has had an impressive year himself. Tokyo’s fast conditions could favor Berrettini’s strong serve, similar to how Ben Shelton won last year’s title there.

The tournament aims not to be overshadowed by China Open’s star-studded lineup featuring Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, and Daniil Medvedev. But with players like Taylor Fritz, Casper Ruud, and Stefanos Tsitsipas participating in Tokyo too, it promises excitement nonetheless!

What do you think about all these changes?
