Djokovic Allegedly Hires Murray to Upstage Nadal’s Retirement

-

Andy Roddick hinted that Novak Djokovic made a big announcement to steal the spotlight from Rafael Nadal‘s retirement. Just over a week ago, Nadal bid an emotional farewell to tennis, leaving Djokovic as the last of the famous trio still competing. Murray, who was a major rival until 2017 with three Grand Slam victories and 11 finals appearances, retired this year after battling hip injuries for seven long years.

Nadal’s career concluded after Spain lost in the Davis Cup quarterfinals against the Netherlands. Unfortunately, his final match didn’t go as planned when he lost to Botic van de Zandschulp. The doubles team of Carlos Alcaraz and Marcel Granollers also fell short against Wesley Koolhof and van de Zandschulp, marking Spain’s exit from the tournament.

Following these events, there was a retirement ceremony for Nadal that some found disappointing. Toni Nadal felt it fell short of expectations while Carlos Moya labeled it "shabby." Despite this criticism, David Haggerty from the International Tennis Federation defended it by saying that Nadal was celebrated just how he wanted.

Djokovic’s Surprising Announcement:

In what could have been a week focused on Nadal’s retirement, Djokovic made waves by announcing Andy Murray as his new coach until at least 2025’s Australian Open. Fans might wonder if this move was timed to overshadow Nadal’s news. This unexpected partnership caught everyone’s attention since Djokovic and Murray faced off in seven Grand Slam finals with Djokovic winning five times but losing at the US Open in 2012 and Wimbledon in 2013.

Roddick couldn’t help but comment on this timing during an episode of Served with Andy Roddick. He humorously suggested that Djokovic might enjoy stirring up excitement in the tennis world: "I get memes are fun… Is it fun to know that you can create a s**tstorm?"

Roddick also questioned why such an announcement needed to happen right after Rafa’s retirement: "Oh, oh, oh! Rafa retired this weekend? Should we dominate the headlines at the end of that week? There was zero reason why this needed to be announced."

Despite their rocky start due to past accusations from Roddick about faking injuries (oops!), both players share a sense of humor now which may lead Djokovic to appreciate Roddick’s cheeky remarks.
