Ex-Wimbledon Champion Advises Djokovic to Change Schedule for Success

-

Novak Djokovic is known as a tennis legend with many victories, but even he can make mistakes. Recently, he captured his 24th Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2023. However, in 2024, he couldn’t add another trophy to his collection. His eyes are set on winning a 25th major title by 2025, which would place him at the top of tennis history.

To achieve this goal, Djokovic decided to play fewer tournaments in 2024. At age 37, he’s focusing on keeping his body healthy so he can continue competing for longer. He plans to participate mainly in Grand Slams and essential events that help him prepare for these big tournaments.

But not everyone agrees with this strategy. Pat Cash, who won Wimbledon back in 1987, thinks Djokovic might be making a mistake by playing less often. Cash told Tennis365 that playing fewer matches could make players lose their “match toughness,” especially during grueling Grand Slams.

Pat Cash’s Perspective:

Cash explained how older players sometimes struggle when they try to save their energy by playing less. They might start losing five-set matches or have more off days because they’re not used to the intensity anymore. “That’s match toughness,” said Cash. Even though Djokovic has played many matches over his career, staying sharp for five-set Grand Slam battles is crucial.

If Djokovic enters a Grand Slam without enough practice matches under his belt, he might face tough early rounds that tire him out too soon. Fans might wonder if this approach will hurt or help him in the long run.

“We often say you can’t afford tough five-setters early in a Slam,” Cash warned. “Especially as you get older.” If you haven’t played enough beforehand and find yourself in a long match early on, it could leave you feeling sore and worn out.

Andy Murray’s Role:

Interestingly, Andy Murray is now part of Djokovic’s team and may assist him with scheduling decisions since Murray was known for playing frequently despite injuries throughout his career.

“Andy always tried to compete regularly until the end,” noted Cash about Murray’s strategy. He believes finding the right balance of matches could be key for Djokovic moving forward.

Despite earlier plans suggesting otherwise, it seems like Djokovic might adjust his schedule after all—he’s already signed up for Brisbane International and Qatar Open in Doha for the upcoming season! What do you think? Should Novak stick with fewer tournaments or play more?
