Federer & Djokovic Honor Thiem at Vienna Retirement Ceremony

-

Dominic Thiem had a heartfelt farewell ceremony at the Vienna Open 2024, with Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic sharing warm words about him.

In May, Thiem declared that 2024 would be his last year playing tennis professionally, choosing to end his career in Vienna felt just right.

Thiem’s tennis skills were a spectacle on the ATP Tour; his powerful shots and one-handed backhand made him stand out.

Memorable Moments:

Thiem’s crowning achievement was winning the US Open in 2020 after an incredible comeback against Alexander Zverev, though no fans were there due to COVID-19. He also triumphed over Federer at Indian Wells in 2019 and reached several Grand Slam finals, but injuries eventually took their toll.

Fans might feel sad knowing their favorite player is leaving the court for good.

The wrist injury he suffered during a match with Adrian Mannarino at the Mallorca Open in 2021 marked a turning point. Despite efforts to return, he decided to retire.

At the Vienna Open, Thiem faced Luciano Darderi in what would be his last tournament. Sunday was dedicated to celebrating his career with an exhibition set against Zverev. Although rivals on court, Zverev expressed sadness over losing a friend: “First and foremost, I’m losing a friend on the Tour… I hope he gets bored in a year or two and comes back.”

Federer and Djokovic couldn’t attend but sent video messages praising Thiem’s character and contributions to tennis. Federer highlighted their friendship: “You were always a super guy… All the best with the future.” Djokovic thanked him for everything given: “Thank you very much for all that you have given… One last dance.”

Thiem was deeply moved by this tribute event. On social media, he expressed gratitude: “What a night! I would like to sincerely thank everyone who joined me…”
