Former Champion Ruud Stunned in Bastad Open Opener

-

Casper Ruud won’t be taking home the Bastad Open trophy this year after losing to Thiago Monteiro in straight sets.

Ruud has had strong performances at the ATP 250 tournament in Bastad before, winning it a few years ago and reaching the final last year where he lost to Andrey Rublev.

This time, things didn’t go as planned. His doubles match with Rafael Nadal went well , but his singles game was disappointing.

Thiago Monteiro has been playing amazing tennis this year and continued that form by defeating Ruud 6-3, 6-3. Fans might think it’s shocking since Ruud is one of the best on clay and was using this event to prepare for the Olympics.

Monteiro’s Dominance:

Monteiro played excellently on both his first and second serves, giving Ruud only one break point opportunity which he couldn’t convert. In contrast, Monteiro had six break points against Ruud and capitalized on three of them.

Ruud’s game wasn’t particularly bad; he just couldn’t match Monteiro’s level. The Brazilian hit 32 winners in just 18 games while Ruud managed only 19, showing a clear difference in their performances.

The aggressive play style that Monteiro showcased worked perfectly for him at this event. Hopefully, Ruud will have better luck when he teams up with Nadal again for doubles.

What do you think about the match?
