Holger Rune knows his last two tennis seasons didn’t go as planned.
In 2021, he amazed everyone by winning 75 matches across various competitions. Then, in 2022, he stepped up to the big leagues of Tour-level tennis.
That year, Rune claimed his first title at an ATP Challenger event in Sanremo. Just weeks later, he celebrated victory at the Munich Open and then triumphed again at the Stockholm Open. It was a season full of surprises for him.

He entered the Paris Masters unseeded but ended up beating Novak Djokovic in the final to win the ATP Masters 1000 tournament. This victory pushed him into the Top 10 and sparked talk among fans about a new “Big Three” with Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
Challenges and Reflections:
While Alcaraz went on to win four Grand Slams and became the youngest World No. 1 ever, Sinner also grabbed two majors and now holds that top spot too. Meanwhile, Rune’s only title since then has been another Munich Open win in 2023.
Despite staying within the Top 20 rankings, watching his peers succeed might be tough for Rune . Yet recently, he’s shown why many still see him as one of ATP Tour‘s brightest young stars.
Fans might wonder if Rune can catch up with his rivals soon. He openly admitted past mistakes during an interview at London’s Ultimate Tennis Showdown Grand Final in 2024.
At just 21 years old now, Rune confessed he hadn’t worked hard enough before but is determined to change that: “I have always believed in myself… Now I am putting the right work in I hope the rewards will come.” He emphasized focusing on specific areas like fitness and mental strength: “Everyone can say they want to win a Grand Slam…”
Coaching decisions have been tricky for him too—he tried working with Patrick Mouratoglou three times! Boris Becker and Severin Luthi also coached him briefly; both are known for guiding legends Djokovic and Federer respectively.
“I can only blame myself because decisions were all made by me,” said Rune about choosing coaches who fit well personally rather than just professionally.
Ultimately though he returned back under Lars Christensen’s guidance—his former coach whom seems perfect fit now—and feels confident moving forward: “There are not hundreds of guys out there…but it’s about having right people…”
Do you think this new coaching approach will help Holger reach higher levels?
