Hurkacz Out Until 2025 Australian Open Due to Injury

-

Hubert Hurkacz won’t be playing in the 2024 Paris Olympics due to a serious injury.

He got hurt during his second-round match at Wimbledon against Arthur Fils and had to retire in the fourth set. Since then, he has been working hard to recover but couldn’t make it back in time for the Olympics.

Despite his efforts, Hurkacz realized that his injury was more severe than expected . He shared details with Eurosport, explaining how he knew something was wrong right away.

Injury Details:

“During the Wimbledon match, when I tried to get up, when I threw myself into the volley, I had a crooked foot and I was only getting up from the knee, the quadriceps. When I was crooked, I tore part of my meniscus.”

“We didn’t know what it was at first, but I felt two crunches and I knew it wasn’t good. With the surgery to remove part of the meniscus, the normal state of recovery lasts several months. We knew that it would be a very difficult task to give ourselves a chance to play in the Olympics.”

“The progress was fast, very good, but on Sunday, when I went out on the court for the first time to play with my sister, I felt that I did not have that confidence in my leg, I did not feel comfortable and I could not move normally. I was supposed to play in the Olympics in six days, so I knew that it was not realistic.”

Initially aiming for an Olympic comeback seemed impossible after realizing his leg wasn’t ready.

“We wanted to go to the Olympics to have a chance to fight for medals. Unfortunately, my health didn’t allow me to do that this year; it’s dangerous. I could do something to myself since my leg isn’t ready yet.”

Fans might think it’s really unfortunate news given his high hopes.

Now he’s focusing on preparing for tournaments like Cincinnati Open and US Open happening around mid-August and September.

“We are trying to prepare for tournaments in the USA; we work every day for a dozen or so hours a day getting our leg in shape. We fought for Olympics; we didn’t make it—now fighting next tournaments—to be healthy & play.”

Doctors told him there’s also a chance he might miss all remaining 2024 events returning only by Australian Open 2025.

“I spoke with doctors right after injury—eight out ten said realistically could only play Australia.”
