Kyrgios Admits He Never Warms Up

-

Nick Kyrgios recently made a surprising admission about his tennis routine.

It’s been over two years since he played in the 2022 Wimbledon final, where he lost to Novak Djokovic. Many thought this would be his big break to start winning Grand Slams regularly.

But then, a major knee injury at the end of 2022 derailed his momentum completely.

Nick’s Injury and Attempted Comeback

In June 2023, Kyrgios tried to return at the Stuttgart Open but struggled with movement and lost in the first round to Wu Yibing. Since then, he hasn’t entered any tournaments.

However, there’s been some hopeful news lately. He practiced with Djokovic at Wimbledon this year , showing signs of improvement. Djokovic even mentioned a possible comeback date for Kyrgios, although it’s not set in stone due to ongoing recovery challenges.

Fans might feel optimistic yet cautious about his return.

Kyrgios has kept busy with punditry and commentary work. He even commented on Djokovic’s loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final, saying Djokovic started panicking during the match.

The Australian is expected to play in the Ultimate Tennis Showdown in October. This could be his first appearance since Stuttgart unless he plays doubles on the ATP Tour before that.

Unusual Training Habits

On ‘All on the Table’ with Alexander Bublik and Patrick Mouratoglou, Kyrgios revealed something shocking: before his injury, he never warmed up before matches!

“Playing tennis now, like I have to warm up for like 30 minutes, which is new. I never warmed up in my entire life. Now I got to walk, like 45 minutes, then get tape, then train.”

He also shared how unprepared he was before beating Daniil Medvedev at the US Open fourth round in 2022:

“I’m not lying to you. Bro, even that year in 2022—zero warmup bro. I would go from talking to him to just playing… Like against Medvedev… It’s cold’ish; I couldn’t move… You use your drop shots more because you can’t move your legs.”

Fitness experts wouldn’t recommend this approach for success but it didn’t stop him from thrilling fans worldwide until his injury occurred.

It looks like Kyrgios might soon be back on court again! What do you think about his unique style?
