Nick Kyrgios is planning a comeback to tennis at the 2025 Australian Open, despite earlier bleak predictions about his career.
The 29-year-old hasn’t played much since late 2022, a year where he shone brightly with 37 victories—the best since his 43 wins in 2016. Sadly, his season came to an abrupt halt when he withdrew from the Japan Open before facing Taylor Fritz in the quarter-finals.
He tried returning during off-season exhibitions but struggled. First, he lost to Cameron Norrie at the Diriyah Tennis Cup with scores of 6-10 and 6-10 in super tie-breaks. Then, at the World Tennis League, Felix Auger-Aliassime defeated him 7-5, 6-3, followed by Grigor Dimitrov’s win of 7-6(5), 6-3.

Nick’s Journey Back:
In one match during 2023, it was clear that a wrist injury hindered him. However, Kyrgios is now gearing up for a return at the Australian Open in two years’ time. Speaking on a panel in Sydney at SXSW (South By Southwest), he confirmed plans to compete at this Grand Slam event.
“I will be playing the Australian Open this summer,” Kyrgios shared enthusiastically. “I just miss being out there playing in front of a home crowd.”
His injury was severe; surgeons doubted he’d play again . But Kyrgios wished for just a few more years on court: “The surgeon said I probably wouldn’t be able to play again… just try and get me another two to three years…”
Fans might wonder if he’ll ever reach his former glory after such setbacks.
Despite calling recent years ‘brutal’, he’s optimistic about performing again before his fellow Australians in Melbourne: “It’s been tough… but I want to light up the crowd.”
Kyrgios acknowledges that expectations should be tempered—Dominic Thiem never fully returned from similar injuries—but he’s still dreaming big. His goal remains winning a Grand Slam like he did once in doubles; reaching Wimbledon finals only fueled this desire further.
“Whether it is good or bad,” he says confidently yet cautiously, “it will certainly be fun… My motivation is trying for another Grand Slam.”
