Kyrgios Labeled Overrated by Former World No. 3

-

Nick Kyrgios is facing criticism from two former Russian tennis stars after announcing his return to the sport.

Throughout his career, many expected great things from him. He made waves early on by defeating legends like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic in their first encounters.

Despite these impressive wins, he often fell short of expectations. Until 2022, his best Grand Slam results were reaching the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in 2014 and the Australian Open in 2015.

Mixed Reactions to Kyrgios’ Career

From 2016 to 2021, he never advanced beyond the fourth round in major tournaments. Although he won seven titles, many believe he didn’t live up to his potential. Some think he could have claimed a Grand Slam title if he’d focused more on tennis.

However, not everyone agrees with this view. Nikolay Davydenko, once ranked World No. 3 and known for beating all members of the Big Three—Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic—has shared his thoughts on Kyrgios’ career.

Fans might feel torn about these opinions since they have seen both brilliance and inconsistency from Kyrgios over the years.

Speaking with BetBoom Tennis after Kyrgios announced a comeback at the 2025 Australian Open, Davydenko was harsh in his critique: “He is generally overrated… When it was time to play, he was always injured. In short, let’s forget about him.”

Elena Vesnina also chimed in but acknowledged some of Kyrgios’ strengths like his serve and forehand while agreeing that he couldn’t deliver when it counted most: “I agree. But he is incredibly talented and gifted… But when it came to winning a major title, all that went up in smoke.”

She further commented that showmen like Kyrgios struggle to maintain consistency needed for winning Grand Slams: “Nick is capable of beating strong tennis players… I doubt he can play for two weeks at a level that would allow him to win a Slam.”

What do you think? Can Nick prove them wrong or will history repeat itself?
