Kyrgios Surprised by Rise, Compares to Federer & Nadal

Nick Kyrgios never reached his full potential, but he showed flashes of brilliance.

His career was a winding path with many ups and downs. Despite the struggles, he eventually displayed his immense talent.

People saw his potential right away: powerful serves, amazing court angles, but a lack of professionalism held him back .

In 2022, Kyrgios took tennis seriously and made it to the Wimbledon final. He didn’t seem out of place; he looked like a champion in waiting. This could have happened earlier in his career, but that’s another story.

Kyrgios himself never thought he’d go pro. On the Tennis Insider podcast, he recalled how he never saw himself as a professional player when younger. The potential was undeniable though.

Unexpected Journey:

“I never thought I was going to become a pro. I was playing from seven and then I got to about 15 and I was, you know, going up the ranks,” he said on the podcast. “Obviously playing a lot of junior events and then won a couple of junior doubles Grand Slams.”

Kyrgios always loved basketball more than tennis. If not for tennis success, he’d probably be shooting hoops instead.

Despite winning an ATP Challenger event at 17—joining names like Raonic and Federer—he still doubted himself. “I just laughed,” he said about seeing those names on the list.

Fans might think it’s sad how injuries have limited him now because they remember those moments when his talent shone brightly .

“And then a year later it was…I was there,” Kyrgios reflected on reaching top levels quickly yet unexpectedly.

He did get very good early on but didn’t fully commit until later years. Now injuries have taken their toll; it’s an unfulfilled story of what could have been amazing potential.

What do you think? Did Kyrgios miss out or make the most of his talent?
