Matteo Berrettini clinched the 2024 ATP Comeback Player of the Year award after an impressive season. Overcoming a series of unfortunate injuries, he had once reached the Wimbledon final in 2021, hinting at his potential peak. Yet, injuries plagued him for years, sidelining him throughout 2023 and making recovery seem elusive.
The year 2024 began with setbacks as Berrettini missed the Australian tournaments due to health issues. However, his return kicked off during the Sunshine Double with an ATP Challenger event in Phoenix. Though he lost to Nuno Borges in the final, it was a promising start.
Despite an early Miami Open exit against Andy Murray, Berrettini’s persistence paid off when he triumphed at the Marrakech Open—his first title since 2022. Fans might say this victory marked a turning point for him.

Berrettini’s Remarkable Journey:
Riding on momentum, he reached another final at Stuttgart but faced tough luck at Wimbledon against Jannik Sinner in round two. Undeterred by this setback, Berrettini claimed consecutive titles in Gstaad and Kitzbuhel, bringing his total to three for the year—a personal best.
In September, his stellar performance helped Italy qualify for the Davis Cup Finals by winning all matches during the round-robin stage. With Jannik Sinner’s support, they powered through to secure Italy’s Davis Cup title.
As the season concluded, Berrettini found himself nominated alongside Marin Cilic and Kei Nishikori for Comeback Player of the Year by ITWA members; players themselves chose him as winner! In gratitude-filled video messages sent out afterward: “I’m just so happy… great effort from me and my team.”
