Medvedev’s Wild Meltdown at ATP Finals

-

Daniil Medvedev had a peculiar day on the tennis court during the ATP Finals against Taylor Fritz.

The year 2024 hasn’t been kind to Medvedev, especially when you think about his past successes. The ATP Finals is his last shot at grabbing a title before the season wraps up, with his last win being at the Italian Open in May 2023.

Placed in a challenging group with Fritz, Alex de Minaur, and Jannik Sinner, Medvedev faced an uphill battle. Before all this drama unfolded, he had some happier moments reminiscing about being world No. 1 alongside Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz . Despite reaching that pinnacle in 2022, he’s now trailing behind Sinner by quite a margin in rankings. Fans might wonder if he’ll ever reclaim that top spot again.

Unexpected Court Drama:

Fritz sits just behind him at No. 5 and could leapfrog Medvedev with better results here. He started strong by beating Medvedev 6-4, 6-3 in their opening match. Though Fritz played well and showed how much he’s improved this year, Medvedev seemed far from his best form.

Throughout the match, frustration was written all over Medvedev’s face as he made three double-faults in a row to lose the first set unexpectedly. But what happened next was even more surprising! In the second set, after getting broken at 2-3 against Fritz’s powerful serve, things went downhill fast for him.

Unable to keep calm any longer—Medvedev tossed his racket high into air earning himself a point penalty due to an earlier violation too! Yet still not done causing chaos; he began throwing rackets closer but deliberately missing catches trying hard it seemed—to provoke umpire into defaulting him entirely!

Oddly enough though despite these antics (including putting racket backward while returning), umpire didn’t punish further which left many scratching heads wondering why? Some might find such behavior amusing sometimes—but hopefully next time around we won’t see similar tantrums from Australian Open runner-up again!

So what do you think—is this just part of being fiery competitor or should there be consequences for such actions?
