Milos Raonic Withdraws from Canadian Open in Montreal

-

Milos Raonic had to pull out of his match against Holger Rune at the 2024 Canadian Open in Montreal.

Raonic is still playing tennis, though not on a regular basis. He participates in some major events, but his future in tennis remains uncertain.

When he does compete, he performs well. The Paris Olympics were decent for him, but his career won’t last forever. This week’s Canadian Open was supposed to be his next event, but he had to withdraw from the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Canada.

He did well at this event last year, but this time things didn’t go as planned. After warming up for the match against Rune, Raonic decided not to play and explained why during a press conference.

“It was a pretty shitty feeling, but I tried to warm up for my match today. The thing that was the most difficult was to serve. Yeah, I don’t think I would have been able to be competitive by any means.”

“I can manage a lot of things, but without serving, that would be a tough day for me. So just had pain down my shoulder and got to see where it’s at.”

Shoulder Pain Struggles:

Raonic’s serve has always been key to his game ; without it, winning becomes much harder. Unfortunately, shoulder pain isn’t new for him—it started after returning from Paris and playing on hard courts again.

He hoped it would get better with some rest days off the court. But warming up made it clear he couldn’t compete this time around—such bad luck!

“Yeah, it came up initially right when I came here on hard courts after the clay. I was playing points the other days and I was kind of having similar feelings. Took some days off trying to kind of feel better about it. It just wasn’t anywhere close to where I need it to be.”

Fans might think it’s really sad that Raonic can’t play at home because these tournaments are why he keeps going.

Missing out on his home event is heartbreaking since these matches matter so much to him. He also looked forward to doing well at upcoming tournaments like the US Open.

Raonic told reporters he’ll need more tests before deciding if he’ll play in the season’s final major tournament.

“Yeah, they say I need more tests—that’s the thing. We were checking a few things so they were saying I just need a chance to do an MRI which wasn’t possible till now.”

What do you think about Raonic missing this big event?
