Murray Addresses Raducanu’s Wimbledon Doubles Snub

-

Controversy sparked at Wimbledon 2024 when Emma Raducanu withdrew from her mixed doubles match with Andy Murray.

Emotions ran high at the Paris Olympics, marking Murray’s final professional event after he announced his retirement.

Sadly, Murray couldn’t compete in the singles. It would have been a fitting end for him to play singles one last time, especially after winning gold in 2012 and 2016.

Mixed Doubles Drama:

Despite this, some media still focused on Raducanu pulling out of their mixed doubles match to stay fit for her fourth-round singles at Wimbledon. Fans might think it’s understandable she wanted to focus on her singles run.

Murray had already played an emotional doubles match with his brother Jamie on Centre Court, followed by a touching video tribute from players like Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic. His last goodbye was supposed to be with Raducanu, but her withdrawal caused quite a stir.

Judy Murray was among those upset. She tweeted her shock about Raducanu’s decision . This tweet got lots of attention online; some agreed with Judy while others supported Raducanu’s choice.

In a press conference before the Olympics, Murray said he didn’t mind Raducanu’s decision and was happy his final match was with his brother on Centre Court.

>”Everyone is going to look out for their best interests and what it is that they do. I understand that, and I don’t have an issue with that. Getting to finish playing at Wimbledon on Centre Court with my brother was unbelievably special.”

>”That obviously wasn’t how I’d planned it. That’s how it ended up, and I’m really happy about that. I’m not frustrated or bitter about it. I’m happy that I got to finish playing at Wimbledon with my brother.”

Though he wasn’t upset with Raducanu, Murray defended his mom Judy too. He said emotions were high during his final Wimbledon appearance which made sense why she reacted strongly.

>”At that moment everyone’s really emotional because it’s the end of me playing at Wimbledon… She’s my mum so she obviously cares a lot about me.”

>”What had happened in the 10 days in the build-up as well… Everyone’s emotions are obviously running high but my mum’s always going to support me and look out for my best interests.”

What do you think? Was Raducanu right to focus on herself or should she have played?
