Nadal Reveals Moonballing Tactic in Four-Hour Bastad Win

-

Rafael Nadal surprised many during his quarter-final win at the Bastad Open by using ‘moonballs’.

At 38, Nadal’s age is starting to show in his game, so he has to get creative. In his match at the ATP 250 tournament in Bastad, he had to use different tactics.

Nadal faced Mariano Navone for nearly four hours and won 6-7(2), 7-5, 7-5. During this intense match, he used various strategies, including the unexpected ‘moonballs’ tactic .

These high balls aim to push opponents back and disrupt their rhythm. Though more common in WTA matches due to less power on shots, Nadal adopted this approach against Navone.

Moonball Strategy:

Even with one of the best forehands ever and a solid backhand, Nadal chose this tactic. He especially used it from his backhand side. When asked if it was a new strategy, he said he’s always adapted based on opponents and conditions.

“I do what I normally do during my career; I adapt as needed,” said Nadal.

Fans might think it’s interesting how even top players like Nadal have to change their game as they age.

Seeing that moonballs worked well since his backhand wasn’t sharp initially but improved later, he stuck with it. “I started badly with my backhand but then got better,” he admitted.

The windy conditions in Bastad also helped him. As a coastal city with frequent winds, it made his tactic even more effective during the match.

“When the wind helped from one side of the umpire’s chair,” Nadal explained, “it made it hard for him to hit good returns.”
