Nadal to Skip Wimbledon for Olympics

-

It’s official: Rafael Nadal won’t be competing at Wimbledon next month.

The third Grand Slam of the year, held on the grass courts of Wimbledon in London, kicks off on July 1st. Although Nadal had initially signed up to play using a protected ranking, fans will miss his presence this year.

Nadal has won Wimbledon twice, including the epic 2008 final against Roger Federer and another victory in 2010. However, recent trips to London haven’t been as successful for him.

News Confirmed:

In his last three appearances at Wimbledon, Nadal reached the semifinals each time. With 2024 shaping up as a potential farewell tour, UK fans were eager to see him one last time since he last played in 2022.

David Ferrer confirmed everyone’s fears during a press conference on Wednesday. Nadal will skip Wimbledon this year to focus on the Olympic Games in Paris instead.

Interestingly, Nadal has been practicing on clay even after his early exit from Roland Garros last month. This suggests that grass isn’t high on his list of priorities right now.

Fans might think it’s sad news but understandable given his focus on Paris Olympics.

Since the Olympics will be held at Roland Garros this year, it makes sense for Nadal not to switch surfaces. His record there is incredible: 14 French Open titles and a stunning 112-4 win-loss record.

What do you think about Nadal’s decision?
