Rune Discusses Hamburg Open Retirement

Holger Rune’s 2024 Hamburg Open didn’t go as planned due to a knee injury.

In his first match, Rune faced Fabian Marozsan and won 6-4, 6-4, but had to take a medical timeout because of knee pain. Despite this, he managed to continue and win his second-round match against Marco Trungelliti with scores of 6-4, 6-3. However, he admitted afterward that his knee was still bothering him .

“The knee is not ideal, let’s see how I feel tomorrow.”

Olympic Dreams in Jeopardy:

This injury couldn’t have come at a worse time for Rune. The Paris Olympics are just around the corner, and he participated in Hamburg to prepare for them. He shared his hopes and confidence about doing well at the Olympics and even predicted success for other Danish athletes.

“I am very confident (going into the Olympics). I feel like I can do it (win the tournament). I believe in myself and I am sure there will be many Danish fans to support not only me but all the Danish athletes.”

“I think we are going to do well, and we are not only good in tennis but in a lot of sports. I’m going to focus on doing my job and bring some medals back to Denmark.”

Unfortunately, Rune had to retire from his quarter-final match against Arthur Fils while trailing 4-6, 1-4. He later addressed his fans on social media about his decision.

“So sorry guys. My knee had caused problems since the incident in the first match. Yesterday was bad. Today I tried but it wasn’t good.”

Fans might be worried about what this means for Rune’s Olympic chances.

Despite this setback, Rune remains optimistic about his future. Last year was tough for him with injuries and losing streaks, but this season feels different since he doesn’t have many points to defend.

“I feel like I’m a much better player this year than I was last year at the same time, even though the ranking was different. I feel like I have grown as a person, player and athlete.”

“It always feels great to play without having any points to defend…I always put a lot of pressure on myself to perform…I want to improve and have good results.”

“I was not playing that well last year after Wimbledon…I am better physically and mentally now than last year…I am only 21 years old so I can only be better from here.”

What do you think? Will Holger bounce back stronger?
