Rune Withdraws from Croatia Open Before Paris Olympics

-

Holger Rune won’t be playing at the 2024 Croatia Open in Umag due to an injury.

This year hasn’t been as great for Rune compared to last year. He had a fantastic run on clay, reaching two ATP Masters 1000 finals and performing well overall.

Despite making it into the Top 20 this year, he hasn’t matched his previous year’s form when he was in the Top 5. This has caused him a lot of frustration throughout the season.

Injury Woes Continue:

Rune’s year has been marred by injuries. Earlier, he missed some matches due to various issues and now faces two new problems just before the Paris Olympics.

Last week at the Hamburg Open, Rune won two matches but had to retire in his third due to a knee injury. His mom, Aneke, revealed that his knee isn’t even the main concern.

The wrist injury he’s been dealing with since Rome is also troubling him. Withdrawing from the Croatia Open makes it unlikely he’ll play in Paris.

“Unfortunately the first exams of my wrist is not looking good. Therefore I will not be able to play in Umag this week. I am happy that I had a chance to meet all my fans here and I hope to come back and play some tennis for you as well.”

“Now some more exams tomorrow and we will see if conclusion is the same from everyone . Thanks for your support and thank you to the tournament for doing everything you could to help me.”

Fans might think it’s too soon to rule out his participation in Paris completely. But considering how Rune described his wrist exam results as “not good,” it’s hard to stay optimistic about a quick recovery before July 27th.

Remember, he’s been struggling with this wrist issue since mid-May during the Italian Open in Rome. It’s now late July; such injuries don’t heal overnight or even within a week usually.

An athlete carrying an injury for over two months rarely sees sudden improvement within days. Still, Rune is trying hard to get ready for the Olympics so he can represent Denmark in Paris.

What do you think? Will Rune make it?
