Holger Rune will change his schedule next year to play in South America.
This year has been tough for the 21-year-old. He started strong by reaching the Brisbane International final in January but lost to Grigor Dimitrov. Since then, he hasn’t made it to another final.
Sadly, Rune hasn’t reached a Grand Slam quarterfinal this year either. Next week’s US Open is his last chance to change that.
Despite these setbacks, there was a glimmer of hope at the Cincinnati Open. Rune made it to his first ATP Masters-1000 semifinal of 2024, even ending Matteo Berrettini’s 10-match winning streak . However, he heartbreakingly lost after leading Frances Tiafoe 5-2 and holding two match points at 5-4.

Upcoming Changes:
Fans might think Rune needs a fresh start after this challenging season. This could be why he’s decided to join the South American Golden Swing in February 2025. The former world No. 4 will compete in two events there, including the ATP-500 Rio Open, which announced his participation with excitement on social media:
“Get your throat ready to scream RUUUUUUUUNE because the Danish player is confirmed to debut in Brazil! At 21 years old, the tennis player is one of the biggest sensations on the circuit and promises to put on a show in Rio. See you soon, Holger Rune!”
Many top players avoid clay courts in February due to March’s hard-court events in Indian Wells and Miami. This makes securing Rune’s participation even more special for them.
Rune will also play at the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires before heading to Rio. The tournament organizers have already started selling advance tickets due to high anticipation.
Alexander Zverev will join him in South America too! Zverev confirmed earlier this month that he’ll compete both in Buenos Aires and Rio, adding more star power .
Carlos Alcaraz played these tournaments recently but plans a different schedule next year by joining Rotterdam Open instead . With Zverev and Rune stepping up, fans are curious if other big names will follow suit.
What do you think about these changes? Will they help Rune bounce back?
