Before this year’s grass-court season, ATP interviewed many players about their predictions. One key question was, “Who will be the dark horse for the grass season this year?” Many named Shelton, including Shelton himself.
Shelton’s confidence isn’t surprising. His powerful serve is perfect for grass courts. He loves taking risks and going for big shots , which can be very effective on this surface.

Shelton picked himself as the dark horse despite a challenging year. His tennis hasn’t been as thrilling as last year, but that’s expected; opponents have learned how to counter him better now. Fans might feel hopeful seeing his self-belief.
It’s up to him to improve and reach new heights. “I’m going to choose myself as a grass-court dark horse. I think I learned a few things last year that I hope will help me this year. I think the grass suits my game well, and I am excited.”
Grass requires adaptation; more play means better performance. With some matches before Wimbledon, Shelton could have an impressive run like Christopher Eubanks did last year by reaching the quarter-finals.
