Sinner Begins Hard-Court Swing as World No. 1 in ATP Rankings

-

Jannik Sinner is now World No. 1 as he heads into the North American hard-court season.

This week, Sinner will defend his title at the Canadian Open starting Tuesday. Even if he doesn’t win, he’ll keep his top ranking thanks to withdrawals from Djokovic and Alcaraz.

Both Djokovic and Alcaraz withdrew after their intense Olympic gold medal match on Sunday . Djokovic finally won his gold medal but will miss the Canadian Open for the sixth year in a row to rest after the Olympics.

Ranking Changes:

Alcaraz, who got silver at the Olympics, won’t play in Montreal either and will lose 180 points from last year’s quarterfinals. He plans to compete in Cincinnati instead.

The number one spot could still change hands by the end of the US Open, but Sinner has a strong hold on it for now. The Olympics didn’t award ranking points, so there weren’t big changes in the Top 10.

Alexander Zverev remains above Daniil Medvedev in fourth place. Hubert Hurkacz moved up to sixth while Alex de Minaur dropped to seventh due to injuries keeping them out of the Olympics.

Andrey Rublev, Casper Ruud, and Grigor Dimitrov round out the Top 10 spots. Tommy Paul is currently ranked 12th ahead of Taylor Fritz (13th) and is now America’s top male player.

Fans might find these shifts interesting as they follow their favorite players’ journeys through rankings .

Fritz lost points in Atlanta and Washington because he played in the Olympics where he won bronze with Paul in doubles. Ben Shelton sits just below them after reaching D.C.’s semifinals.

Four American men are now in ATP‘s Top 20 this week! Sebastian Korda’s decision to skip the Olympics paid off as he started his summer hard-court season early.

Korda won his biggest title yet at Citi Open last weekend, joining his dad Petr as champions of Washington—making history as first father-son duo winning same ATP event!

Sebastian Korda climbs up to No. 18 career-high ranking while Alejandro Tabilo and Karen Khachanov drop out of Top 20; Frances Tiafoe (27th) aims for seeded spot at US Open with good form from Washington (semifinalist).

Flavio Cobolli reaches new career-high World No.33 after an impressive run defeating Shelton, Davidovich Fokina & Michelsen en route Citi Open final debut!

Tallon Griekspoor & Daniel Evans lost ground skipping Citi Open representing countries at Olympics; Griekspoor falls twelve places down (#40), Evans plummets out Top-100 (#176).
