Sinner’s Search for New Coach as Cahill Plans 2025 Exit

Jannik Sinner will need to find a new coach after 2025, with Darren Cahill planning to step away from coaching for a quieter life. The news comes just as the world No. 1 has reached the peak of his career.

Riccardo Piatti, who coached Sinner from age 13 until their surprising split in 2022, has some ideas about who might fill Cahill’s shoes.

“I would like to see Carlos Moya in that position. He was the world number one, he knows the Tour very well. He is a very good person, as is Darren,” Piatti said. “Another good candidate is Renzo Furlan, who has just finished his collaboration with Jasmine Paolini. Ljubicic is also good, as is Becker. However, Boris can be complicated.”

Moya seems to be Piatti’s top choice, though it’s unclear if Rafael Nadal’s former coach wants to return to the tour after guiding Rafa through the final seven years of his career.

The “complications” Piatti mentioned about Boris Becker likely refer to the German’s reluctance to commit to a full travel schedule – the same issue that cut short his coaching relationship with Holger Rune.

Sinner’s decision to part ways with Piatti in 2022 raised eyebrows at the time. After all, Piatti had helped transform him from a talented teenager into a top prospect.

But bringing in Simone Vagnozzi and later adding Cahill proved to be a brilliant move.

Under their guidance, Sinner has become nearly unstoppable. He’s won two Australian Opens, the 2024 US Open, the ATP Finals, and helped Italy claim two Davis Cup titles.

He’s held the world No. 1 ranking since the French Open last year.

Cahill has been more than just a tennis coach for Sinner. The Italian has spoken about how much the Australian supported him during his recent doping controversy, when he tested positive for clostebol after accidental contamination from his physiotherapist.

Unlike his split with Piatti, Sinner clearly doesn’t want to lose Cahill. This time, it’s the coach making the decision to step away.

The world No. 1 is currently serving a ban until May 4th after accepting a three-month suspension from WADA to settle his doping case. When he returns, he and Cahill will try to make the most of their remaining time together.

In a recent interview, Umberto Ferrara, Sinner’s former fitness coach, made a startling revelation about the contamination incident. Ferrara admitted he’s used trofodermin for years to manage a chronic condition, keeping it in his private bathroom away from Sinner. He claims to have warned physiotherapist Giacomo Naldi to keep it away from the player – advice that apparently wasn’t followed.
