Zverev on Doping Saga: No Change in Relationship with Sinner

-

Alexander Zverev commented on Jannik Sinner‘s doping issue before the 2024 US Open, saying their friendship remains strong.

Zverev has spent his entire life in tennis, growing up on the ATP Tour with his brother Mischa and becoming a top player himself. He’s seen many doping controversies, though none as big as this one involving Sinner. The news broke when Sinner was World No. 1, although he tested positive months earlier.

When asked by BILD, Zverev said he learned about it through social media like everyone else. He described the process as simple: a sample is taken, tested, and then appealed if necessary. “I only found out about it and saw it at some point via X and Instagram. And that was it. I don’t have any more information. I think you all know more than I do.”

“In most cases,” Zverev explained, “the sample is opened to see if it’s positive or not. Then they check where it came from and handle objections.” In Sinner’s case, his objection was accepted during an investigation that eventually cleared him of wrongdoing.

Unusual Speed of Process:

What puzzled Zverev was how quickly everything unfolded—within a single day —which is unusual compared to other cases he’s seen. “But here it all came out within a day. That’s the only thing that’s a bit strange.”

Some players were unhappy about this rapid process but acknowledged it followed the rules. Fans might wonder why things moved so fast for Sinner compared to others.

Novak Djokovic pointed out that procedural clarity is needed in such situations, while Zverev admitted he didn’t know enough to form an opinion but supported Sinner personally.

Zverev praised Sinner as a great person with whom he shares a good relationship off the court: “I have no opinion on it because I don’t have enough information. Jannik is a great guy who I know off the court too. I’ve always had a good relationship with him. That won’t change.”
