Zverev Reveals Carlos’ Key Role in Team Europe’s Laver Cup Win

-

Team Europe celebrated their 2024 Laver Cup victory, with Zverev crediting Alcaraz for masterminding their comeback.

Heading into the final day, Team Europe trailed Team World 4-8. They needed to win three out of four matches to clinch the title.

The day began with a doubles match followed by three singles matches. Despite having a strong lineup, confidence was low after the second day.

Alcaraz’s Strategic Genius:

After the event, it came out that Alcaraz had planned their comeback. During a press conference, Zverev shared how they decided who would play. He mentioned that they had a meeting where Alcaraz laid out his plan.

“What was the thinking? Well, it was quite simple. We had a meeting last night. It was extremely simple,” said Zverev. “Carlos walked in and said, ‘I want to play doubles with Casper. Then Daniil will play singles against Shelton.'”

Alcaraz jokingly interrupted Zverev’s story: “Wasn’t me, right?”

Zverev admitted that Alcaraz’s belief in him boosted his confidence immensely.

“Daniil is gonna play singles against Shelton. You are not going to lose to Tiafoe,” Zverev quoted Alcaraz as saying. “He had so much confidence in me; I never had that within myself.”

Medvedev humorously pointed out how everyone seemed to think he would lose his match against Shelton: “So you knew I’m gonna lose, right? (Laughter.)”

Fans might find this insight into team dynamics very interesting and inspiring.

Zverev continued praising Alcaraz for accurately predicting the outcomes: “No, honestly we had like a half-an-hour meeting, and Carlos walked in and decided what we are gonna do and we went to do that.”

Everything unfolded just as Alcaraz predicted—he played doubles with Ruud and won; Medvedev lost to Shelton in three sets; Zverev staged an incredible comeback against Tiafoe; finally, Alcaraz secured Team Europe’s victory by defeating Fritz convincingly.

This year’s Laver Cup turned out to be one of the most thrilling editions recently after two years of Team World’s dominance.
