Zverev Reveals Health Struggles

-

Alexander Zverev has been dealing with health problems lately.

The 27-year-old German athlete, who competes while managing diabetes, has recently shared more about his condition. Fans have seen him frequently checking his sugar levels during matches since he revealed his diagnosis not long ago.

At the 2024 Hamburg Open in his hometown, Zverev reached the final but lost to Arthur Fils. This ATP 500 event was significant for him. In an interview with BILD, he mentioned facing health challenges during the tournament.

Two weeks ago in Hamburg, Zverev noticed something off with his body. He felt unusually tired and experienced similar fatigue in Paris at the 2024 Olympic Games.

“Two weeks ago in Hamburg, I realized that something was wrong with me. I got tired very, very quickly. The training in Paris was not very intense either because I always got tired very quickly and needed longer breaks.”

Health Struggles:

In Hamburg’s second round against Hugo Gaston, he barely managed to win after three sets: 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. He admitted that fatigue hit him hard during this match and again later on.

“In the second round I couldn’t take it anymore after one set and today I had the same feeling. I have to clarify that. It’s time to see what’s happening and get back to the best form I had a few weeks ago.”

At the Paris Olympics, Zverev lost in the quarter-finals to Lorenzo Musetti with scores of 5-7, 5-7. After this loss, he opened up about how serious his condition has become.

Fans might think it’s tough for him right now given these revelations.

Zverev shared that sometimes he sees multiple balls coming at him due to dizziness caused by fluctuating sugar levels.

“If there is a problem with your sugar level, you feel that you are going slower and you don’t feel like exercising. Here I feel dizzy and I see four balls coming towards me. I feel like I can’t do anything anymore.”

He also mentioned that feeling this way makes it impossible for him to compete effectively or win tournaments.

“If I feel like I do now and like I felt all week, I can’t win a tournament like that. I feel like I’m at the beginning of the season.”

The ATP calendar is packed ahead with events like the Canadian Open in Montreal followed by Cincinnati Open before players head to Flushing Meadows for US Open.

What do you think about Zverev’s situation? Should he take some time off?
