Zverev’s Health Battle Behind China Open Withdrawal

-

After weeks of health struggles, Alexander Zverev has finally revealed that he’s been dealing with a condition that affected him, especially at the 2024 Laver Cup.

Since the Paris Olympics, Zverev faced health issues. He went back to Germany for tests but everything seemed fine. He then traveled to the U.S. and played in events leading up to and including the US Open.

Though his performance was below par compared to Roland Garros, his health appeared okay. At the Laver Cup, however, he seemed unsteady during matches.

In a match against Taylor Fritz, Zverev had trouble breathing and needed a medical timeout . Despite continuing to play and even making an incredible comeback against Frances Tiafoe, he was visibly struggling.

Health Diagnosis:

Zverev was supposed to compete in the China Open in Beijing but had to withdraw due to ongoing health problems. Further tests in Berlin revealed he had pneumonia.

He told Deutsche Presse-Agentur that he needs to prioritize his health before returning to competition and apologized for missing the China Open:

“Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with pneumonia, which explains the physical difficulties I’ve had in recent months. I have to take care of my health first so that I can compete again as soon as possible.”

“I am very disappointed that I had to withdraw from the China Open. I will miss my Chinese fans in Beijing and hope to be able to play in front of them again soon.”

Fans might think it’s sad news but also understand why he’s taking time off.

This situation is unfortunate for Zverev with big events like Shanghai Masters coming up. He’s usually done well in China so missing these tournaments is tough.

However, this break could be good for him since he has played a lot this year which causes fatigue . Resting now might help him finish strong later on.

If Zverev takes some weeks off now, he could come back stronger for key events like Paris Masters and ATP Finals at year-end. What do you think about his chances?
